Automated cars a step closer to hitting Australian roads

By Chris Champion posted 16-11-2016 20:07

More automated vehicles could be trialled on Australian roads over the next two years.

Government ministers at a Transport and Infrastructure Council meeting have agreed to a series of initiatives designed to facilitate increased testing and trialling of the vehicles.

The terms of the agreement will also focus on safe performance of more automated vehicles under Australian conditions, provide clarity over insurance coverage in the event of a crash, and develop a more responsive performance-based approach to the regulation of more automated vehicles.

These initiatives are outlined in a policy paper titled Regulatory reforms for automated road vehicles released by the National Transport Commission (NTC).
