Moving a whole city in Sweden

19-05-2016 17:51

The mining city of Kiruna in Sweden is gradually being undermined and it needs to move three kilometres away over the next twenty or so years. Kiruna is the 2nd largest municipality in the world and a few hundred kilometres above the arctic circle. It is the site of one of the largest iron ore mines in the world. Some of the iron ore veins run right under the city centre and there is gradual settlement of the ground. The city needs to be moved to allow the mining to continue. In 2004 Kiruna held a competition among architects to plan and design moving the city. Mark Szulgit, architect with the winning firm White, does not think that the physical move is the most difficult tasks: "The biggest challenge is to move the minds of the people and the culture".
