Message from the President of WFEO
Dear members, associates, supporters, friends and partners of WFEO,
I trust that this newsletter will find you and your colleagues well.
The past few months have witnessed notable progress in reinforcing our efforts for UN Sustainable Development Goals building on the achievements of the World Engineering Day 2021 (WED2021) and the 2nd UNESCO Engineering for Sustainable Development Report.
The United Nations 2021 High Level Political Forum has been held from 6 July to 15 July 2021 with the theme "
Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that promotes the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development: building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development". At this HLPF, WFEO has successfully organized a side event on "
Deploying Global Youth Capacity in UN Policy and Engineering for SDG 13", supported by UNESCO, UNDESA, Young Advisors Group of UN Secretary General on SDG 13, and the Major Group of Youth and Children (MGYC) on July 9.
In the week of 21 June, WFEO was invited to attend the
IEA 2021 Annual Meeting, and presented the working progress of our joint project of reviewing the
Graduate Attributes and Professional Competencies (GAPC) Framework and proposed update the GAPC Framework, which was approved by the International Engineering Alliance on 21 June 2021. After years of endeavors, the renewed GAPC Framework adds the requirement of transformation in engineering and that the awareness of sustainable development should be embedded in every engineer's mind. This is a noteworthy achievement of WFEO in collaboration with IEA playing a significant role in updating the benchmark of Engineering Education. Further work is expected on support and cooperation for its implementation.
In collaboration with its Affiliate Member, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the International Science Council (ISC), WFEO organized a Science & Technology Innovation (STI) Forum 2021 side event under the theme "
Engineering – Bridging the Gap for a Sustainable and Resilient Recovery" on 4 May, which discussed the crucial role of engineering in the implementation of the SDGs and more importantly, how to bridge the gap and achieve sustainable and resilient recovery from this and any in the future pandemics.
ISO publishes a new handbook with guidance on
ISO 37001 Anti-bribery management systems. WFEO is a partner in the project and plays a special role by being a liaison organization to the ISO project committee and by providing a chair of the drafting committee.

- The first African Scientific, Research and Innovation Council (ASRIC)Conference on Engineering Sciences organized by ASRIC Secretariat & Obour Institutes in Cairo, Egypt, between 6 and 8 September 2021. More information on this page.
- The 5th World Landslide Forum (WLF5) to be held between 2 and 6 November 2021, in Kyoto, Japan, aiming at motivating actions for landslide risk reduction. More information on this page.

This newsletter will update you with more recent progress of WFEO and the incoming events for your attention. Though facing of numerous disruptive changes nowadays, WFEO will continue to engage our members for global collaboration and leverage engineering as a strong instrument to bring the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals into reality.
